Before you apply, why not give the following some consideration:

Consider the right role for you

Take time to consider which role to apply for, we recommended that you only apply for one. We know it can be a tough decision to make so we’d suggest that you think about your previous work experience or studies, and consider what skills or qualifications you’ve gained along the way that could be transferable in to the role you want to apply for.

Do your homework

This part is so important and is what can set you apart from the rest. For our entry level roles in particular, we are committed to teach you what you need to know in order to do the job properly but what we do expect is that you demonstrate your passion and commitment to the role you’re applying to. For all of our roles, whatever the level, ensure you research the role, our company and the retail industry. We’re all extremely passionate about what we do and the industry we work in, and we expect the same from you.

Your CV represents you

We’re lucky to have lots of people who want to work for us, so the competition is pretty fierce. Remember that we don’t get to see or speak to you at this point so we suggest that to make your application stand out from the crowd, you tailor your C.V to the role you’re applying for. Taking the time to highlight your transferable skills and experience is essential to you being successful.

Attention to detail

Double and triple check your application for spelling and grammatical errors – getting a friend, relative or tutor to review your application before you submit it is a great idea.

Back up your claims

At various points within our recruitment process you’ll be asked key questions relating to your previous work experience. Be sure to think of some great examples of where you’ve demonstrated a similar skill set to the role you’re applying for.

Plan your time well

We suggest that you take time when writing your application so allow yourself adequate time to complete it.

Your telephone interview

If your online application is successful you’ll progress through to a telephone interview with one of our recruiters. Remember to be passionate, knowledgeable and have some questions ready – we recognise this is a two way process and we’ll be expecting you to want to know more.

Research the role thoroughly

Be prepared to talk through your understanding of the role you have applied for. Why do you think its right for you? What skills and experience do you have that make you a great candidate for the role?

Research the business

Look at our trading website, at various retail publications and the newspapers. There’s also lots of useful information available on this careers site.

Think about your setting

Ensure you are in a quiet area with minimal background noise, we need to be able to hear you and vice versa.

Listen carefully

Focus on each question and speak as clearly and concisely as possible.

Preparing for your interview or assessment centre

We conduct assessment centres for most of our entry level roles within the Store Support Centres and a two stage interview process for all other roles. This is your first opportunity to make an impression in person, so it is key to take time to prepare yourself in advance.

Check the facts

Ensure you are clear on the date, time, location and name of the person you’ll be meeting. Allow plenty of time to travel to your interview or assessment centre – especially if you’re using public transport!

Think about your appearance

Our Buying, Design, Merchandising and Multi Channel teams don’t tend to wear suits; you’ll usually find them sporting something fairly fashionable. Our support functions within the Store Support Centres tend to be slightly more corporate and our retail teams even more so. We’d suggest that you wear something to reflect the business area you are interviewing for, ensuring that you are smart, comfortable and above all looking professional.

Get to know the business

Find out as much as you can about House of Fraser in advance, make sure you visit a store and our website as an absolute minimum!

Be prepared to sell yourself

This is your opportunity to really sell yourself so think about why you’re the best candidate for the job, familiarise yourself with the job profile and the key skills needed, and be prepared to talk through examples of situations that will best demonstrate those skills.

Prepare some questions

Remember that an interview is a two way thing! We encourage you to be as inquisitive as possible – it’s key to us that you know enough about both the role and us as an employer to enable you to make a quick decision if offered the job.

Your interview / assessment centre

Well done! You’ve successfully beat off a huge amount of competition to get to this point. Make sure you consider the points below when you’re attending either your interview or assessment centre, in order to make the best possible impact.

Be punctual

Plan your route and plan some contingency time so you are prepared for any unexpected delays!

Be aware of your body language

Be aware of your body language; whether you’re taking part in a group exercise or a face to face interview, it’s important to look engaged, with lots of eye contact in order to build rapport. You’ll be surprised how much your body language gives away - our assessor can tell a lot about what you’re thinking or feeling just through how you’re handling yourself.

Be a good listener

Listen carefully to the questions being asked of you and try to keep your answers focused on the subject matter. It’s ok to ask your assessor to repeat or reframe the questions – we’d rather you take the time to reflect and answer correctly, than not at all.

Speak clearly and confidently

Remember it is not just what you say, it is how you say it!

Pick your examples wisely

Reflect and think of the best example possible rather than giving a number of weak examples.

Be yourself

Relax and enjoy it – we believe that you’re at your best when you allow yourself to be yourself!
