Introduction

At House of Fraser, our approach to Learning & Development is simple: 'To Grow People to Grow our Business'.

We develop tools and processes that allow managers to identify their teams' strengths and opportunities for development, and then design solutions that allow people to be the best they can possibly be. We firmly believe in choice and recognising people's individual needs. With this in mind we’re determined that all of our learning and development solutions should focus on ‘my training – my way’.

There are four key areas within our Learning and Development offer:

Leading by example

Inspirational leadership and management development that supports our leaders in driving successful teams

Skills and Knowledge

The technical skills and knowledge to support you in delivering your role

Vision and Values

The standards by which we live & work – they give our work meaning

Learning and Development Capability

Development for the future

Leading by Example

Whether you’re a brand new manager or already established in your role, we have specific management training programmes to support your ongoing development. These include management workshops designed with an emphasis on individual ownership for learning as well as flexible options to learn.

We’re also continually developing our ‘management toolkit’ including self development, next generation management training schemes and senior management development tools, as well as providing clear career paths with ‘stage gates’ to allow people to understand their development needs to progress within the business.

When you join us as a manager, whatever the level, your development will be tailored to support your learning needs based on your experience. In addition to some key ‘technical’ skills training focused around managing others, understanding the customer experience and developing retail commercial skills – there is a suite of 18 behavioural topics in our 'Management Toolkit'. These range from problem solving to presentation skills and team work to time management.

To fast track managers and potential managers we deliver a number of successful ‘structured’ training schemes:-

Simply the Best – this is for ‘potential’ first line managers and is a self directed learning initiative designed to help prepare a driven, enthusiastic employee with bags of potential for a first line manager role or the MTP scheme.

Management Trainee Programme – this is a ‘fast track’ programme for our top talent in stores, who want to become a successful retail manager. The programme lasts for 12 months and is structured around 4 quarters: Understanding retail; retail attachment; putting it into practice; and going solo. Within the following 12 months, the expectation is that the delegate will have secured a first line manager role.

Store Manager Development Programme – This programme is to support the stretch development of our retail managers for their first Store Manager appointment.

Skills and Knowledge

Our company ‘Welcome’ allows you to learn about the business during a two or five day period, dependent on whether you will be working in retail or our store support centre. We believe it is very important, at this early stage in your journey, that time is given to training and development to allow you to explore your new role and its responsibilities.

We are also developing a new Learning and Development portal that will allow our people to access our virtual training environment. This means right from the time you accept a position with us, you will be able to start planning and completing some of the training that will be necessary for you to deliver in your role.

We are also delivering and continually developing our technical training, including a new 'Buyers Development Programme' in 2011 and a new 'Merchandisers Development Programme' for launch in 2012.
